DONATE BLOOD AND SAVE LIFE !
The need of BLOOD can be understood the most by two people, the patient who needs it and his family…….and….the treating doctor !(Bloody Waste-Cover Story, The Week, Sept 09)
Less numbers of blood bank, poor storage facilities and non availability of means for fast testing for AIDS infection are major issues hindering the availability of blood, but the most significant hurdle is the mindset of the common man. It’s not the uneducated, but even the educated are hesitant in donating blood, or even if they do, its a lifetime occasion, for the need of someone very close. Its sad that our syllabi in schools and college, media and various awareness camps fail to awaken these sleeping human, who let the blood waste in their body. Blood is naturally changed in the body regularly and the amount donated in one blood donation is replaced without any impact on health, in less than three months. Leave alone donating for unknown people, it’s shocking when people refuse to donate even for their own family members ,this mentality often leading to major dramatic arguments and even fists, when the daughter in law, prevents the son from donating blood for the parents.
With my personal donation score of 52 ,over last fifteen years or so, I would like to use this platform to tell all readers, that since over a decade I have been donating blood four times a year (on birthdays of my wife and daughters and now son-in-law)with absolutely no ill effect, Leave alone any effect on health, there is not even any temporary impact, as I always donate during working hours and continue my routine work immediately after the donation. I have donated once in the middle of the night, between two surgeries, for an injured terrorist, after performing surgeries for the whole day and continued operating. I am not trying to brag, but just want to convey, how harmless blood donation is and what a noble deed it is
Blood knows no caste or religion or creed and hence we should feel free to share this universally common natural commodity which cannot be produced artificially. There is no bigger donation than donating blood and that too with hardly any efforts, so ,donate blood and save a life !
