DONATE BLOOD AND SAVE LIFE !   The need of BLOOD can be understood the most by two people, the patient who needs it and his family.......and....the treating doctor !(Bloody Waste-Cover Story, The Week, Sept 09)   Less numbers of blood bank, poor storage facilities and non availability of means for fast testing for AIDS infection are major issues hindering the availability of blood, but the most significant hurdle is the mindset of the common man. It’s not the uneducated, but even the educated are hesitant in donating blood, or even if they do, its a lifetime occasion, for the need of someone very close. When is a surgeon's sell by date, and what is the shelf life of a surgeon? Surgeons young and old should merely look around them; the young to make mental notes about what to do [and not do] when they are older, and older surgeons should do so as a reality or insight check. I made mental notes about teaching about 25 years ago.   WHY ONLY DOCs !!!!!!   It was doubly sad to read the article 10 Common Most Medical Mistakes (India today,Feb 16,2009) ,firstly because it highlighted the faux pas of my profession,and secondly or rather more intensely,since all the blame was put on the fragile shoulders of the Doctors!   In spite of being a very ardent believer and preacher of the principle,that every doctor should respect the faith ,that the patient,imposes on him or her,specially in a surgeon,in handing over one self,in a state of anesthesia to be cut(operated) ,I cannot resist but put forward my views ,to defend the doctors.   We should all understand that,the doctor is,just a very small part of any medical set-up,be it private or government,and is often as helpless and  harassed as the patient,if not…
