WALKING DOWN MEMORY LANE-ST Francis School/College

memories, school
Walking down memory lane ……a journey of over four decades Walking down memory lane, is probably a misappropriate term! I really don’t have to go back and try to remember anything!! Its all there, as fresh as today, as if it happened yesterday!!! Even though I left St Francis’’ in 1975!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!( sounds pre historic!) I joined SFC, then SFS, in 1968, in class three, after doing KG from Christian College and Prep and Class 1 and 2 from St Ann’s School (Many of you would not have heard of this school-it was the boys section of Loreto Convent in the present building of Avadh Degree college and we were the last batch of students ,before the school closed down) After leaving St Ann’s, most of us had only two alternatives…

PRE TEEN SEX

Kids and teenagers, Sex, Sexuality and Sexual Trends, social trends
Pre Teenage Sex -Is official now !!!!!!!! I am not a very avid newspaper reader, but do go through the first and Editorial pages and that too in the afternoon. How ever I do glance through the headlines, as I gulp down my morning milk shake every day. Today I almost choked over it, when I read that in Chennai the state has submitted a bill to legalize sex at the age of 12. Even me, who considers himself very open minded and who dares to discuss the unspoken, in all forums, was really shocked. I have always supported sex education, by the right person, in phased manner, at right time to right extent, but this is something I could never imagine in my wildest of dreams. While we are still…

DHOBHI GHAT

friendship, love, movies, relationships, Sex, Sexuality and Sexual Trends, social trends
REALITY SUCKS !!!!!!!!!! Someone asked an artist, which is your best painting, and he replied, the next ! This realy applies to Amir Khan.............he never stops surprising you, with a movie better than his last best! and he has done it again in Dhobhi Ghat.Though the movie is the directorial debut of his wife,Kiran Rao,and even though he has been raving about it being the first movie where a wife, directed her husband, one can clearly see impressions of Amir's direction, besides his mega prescence, all over the movie. Dhobhi Ghat flopped miserably at the box office, and wasnt liked much by most, mainly because it was unlike the routine,Bollywood movies, simple.stark, hiting right in the face and sans all masala................even documentaries are more glamorous these days.It was extremely bland with no glamour or melodrama with verything being underplayed,Just a few…

HAZRATGUNJ

Lucknow
HAZRATGUNJ-A Foodie’s Dream !! Gunj has always been, is and shall always be a haven for the foodies and there was a time that restaurants and eating joints in Lucknow, existed only in gunj, except for the ones in old Lucknow. Chaat ,sweets ,kulfi and veg food of Motimahal and Choudharys were very attractive in the yester years and in fact the best in the city, specially famous for chat, milk pudding and nans. So were the meetha pans outside Chowdhary ,folded in a cone, decorated by a silver foil and coconut powder, placed over a ice slab and which could match any dessert. The old Capoors and China bar which was near Mullicks, served drinks and the latter was very famous for its mutton cutlets. Capoors was the only restaurant…

GROWING UP WITH HAZRATGUNJ

Uncategorized
GROWING UP WITH HAZRATGUNJ-------A shoppers delight! Have been wanting to write on Hazratgunj since long, When I returned to Lucknow in 2008, then when it was being revamped, but finally cudnt resist now, when it has taken another new avtar, recently. After my house, what attracts me most to my beloved Lucknow, is Hazratgunj ! Gunj, as what Hazratgunj is popularly and lovingly called, is the main market of Lucknow probably the only market which has a noun to itself-gunjing, which is strolling in Hazratgunj, shopping, eating, and meeting friends or even just whiling away time. Its a unique market, complete in itself and just very few markets in the country, like CP in Delhi, Brigade Road in Banglaru and Main Street in Pune have been designed on this pattern…

Kites

movies
Kites that did not fly !! Kites was a great disappointment and an utter disaster. My sincere apologies to all related to the film, but cant resist this remark,as this was probably the only movies,in which I slipped off to sleep ! There was too much talk and pre release drama for the movie.Unique story,Blend of Hollywood & Bollywood, return of Hrithik.stunning Barbara and the works. But all this was actually missing and probably it was the extra pre release hype that added to the discontentment The story was like a modern day Laila Majnu tale, poorly presented. It revolved around an Indian guy,Hrithik, settled with a green card in Las Vegas. He did odd jobs to earn his living including using his green card to marry girls, temporarily,to help them get an entry in the country. He had great…

MARRIAGE, DIVORCE & LIVE-IN-RELATIONSHIPS

love, Marriage, relationships, Sex, social trends
MARRIAGE, DIVORCE & LIVE-IN-RELATIONSHIPS Relationships are one of my favorite topics for writing and the above three cover most of the aspects of relationships. Though I have written on these on several occasions, I decided to discus them, together and at length, in response to a short statement, recently made by Sonu Nigam. He said, “The truth is that marriage is never a happy story. You can never be happily married and I say this openly. In the next 100 years, there will be no marriages. There will be contracts and that’s better that way because the killer of a marriage is security. The moment the woman or the man feels secure ke ab toh ye mere saath mein hai oh! She is going to be with me for her…

RAM

Mythology, relationships
WAS RAM ACTUALLY MARYADAPURUSHOTTAM ! I am not sure if Ram ,was actually the incarnation of GOD,or even if he was a historic figure, but he is definitely the hero of the great Indian epics,Ramayana and Ramchatramanas, where Balmiki and Tulsidass have presented him as the ideal man ! Ram,as characterized in these epics,is supposed to be the Supreme man-the savior of prestige and honor ! Born in Ayodhya as the eldest son of raja Dashratha, after the consumption of the Kheer received as prasad from the Agni Devta, following a havan,by his mother( Probably artificial insemination ! )he was an adorable child , an obedient student and a great son.He married Sita after a Swamwar, and happily sacrificed the throne and willingly left for fourteen years of exile,to fulfill the wish of his step…

ONE TOO MANY

theatre
NEVER TOO MANY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any number of plays are welcome, and so it was great to have ACTORS (Amateur Creative Talents on Repertory Shows) of Lucknow, present their second production,ONE TOO MANY,last week.I somehow managed to make it,on the last day of the show, and was pleasantly surprised to see,the hall, almost two thirds full,on the last day,in spite of it being a week day,and one of the coldest evenings of this prolonged winter. This just went to show the love of Lucknowites for drama and their appreciation for productions of ACTORS. ONE TWO MANY,was a farcical, two act comedy, about the romantic flings of Grieg.Greig,a married man,was a incorrigible glad-eye,and wouldn't miss a single opportunity to cuddle up with young girls. His compulsive addiction to extramarital sexcapades, didn't even stop him, from moving in the house next to his…

BRINGING UP KIDS

bringing up children
BRINGING UP KIDS It was a pleasure to see Shobha De back to THE WEEK, with her spicy column, The-Sexes and what better way can there be to welcome her, than to respond to the same 9the Sexes-The Week, Feb 13, 2011) The article is almost a book review of Amy Chua’s latest novel, The battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, where the authoress has emphasized the need to be extremely harsh and strict with the kids, to ensure that they do well in life. I totally agree with Shobha’s vehement objections to Amy’s recommendations of treating the child almost as a captive, with strict schedule, rigourous work, time for no fun and even physical punishment. At the same time I also feel that the path laid down by Shaba,…
